PHANTOM LIBRARY by Christine Dong

160 x 220mm, 60 pages, Colour printing, Screw bound, Softcover, Hand numbered edition of 20, 2025

Phantom Library revisits the identity of books and their relationship to the spaces that shelter them. Using a portable scanner, I arbitrarily recorded tangible items within a library, generating nearly 200 phantom books housed within a Phantom Library layered over the physical site. The book consists of two booklets. The writing booklet contains a critical text that reflects upon traditional retrieval structures governed by intellectual arrangement, and proposes a more radical mode of library use that is grounded not in acquisition or certainty, but in drift, encounter, and the possibility of failure. The image booklet presents a selection of books drawn from the phantom library collection. The writing booklet is printed on five different coloured papers and is randomly paired with the image booklet.
