THE GRASS THAT BINDS by Freya Cookson
A5, 36 pages, black and white printing, saddle stitched, 2023
The Grass That Binds began as a personal act of making rings out of the marram that grows on the sand dunes where the artist grew up. This grew into a study of the dune systems along the east coast of Scotland. Marram grass has history with each of the places in the book, and anywhere it grows, it's roots are responsible for binding the sand to make a dune. The book takes a walk from the land, through the slack behind the dunes, into the silence of the dunes themselves and finally emerges onto the beach and into the North sea.
