RECAST: A COLLABORATIVE EXPLORATION OF THE DOVES TYPE by Julia Syrzistie

180mm x 240mm, 48 pages, full colour printing throughout, perfect bound, 2019

‘Recast began as a visual exploration of the Doves Type; an unimaginable yet entirely authentic story of a typeface.Thought to be destroyed at the beginning of the 20th Century through the disposal into the River Thames , the relatively heavy and static typeface managed to partially survive on the riverbed over the period of 100 years. By 2014 it was recovered and made into a digital font.

This book presents photographic and sculptural interpretations of the metal typeface and its material qualities, focusing on the boundary between typography, narrative and illustration. The multi-layered and fragmented story , however, felt unresolved when told only through a visual lens. Recast thus developed into an interdisciplinary collaboration joined by writers Eloise Birtwhistle (poetry) and Sarah Smith (prose). Merging visuals with creative writing, each interpretation focusses on different aspects of the story. The book serves as an outcome of the collaboration.’
