ONLY HANDLE IT ONCE by Cillian Finnerty & Cóilín O'Connell
152 x 229mm, 144 pages, Colour printing, Perfect bound, Softcover, 2026
In archaeology, a hoard is a collection of valuable objects deliberately concealed with the intention of later recovery. In the contemporary imagination, hoarding is a practice of collecting: the compulsive accumulation of (usually worthless) items, or the amassing of vast wealth for its own sake. The hoard is an interruption in the flow of goods or capital, a pause where value either escalates or disintegrates.
Only Handle it Once takes the hoard as both subject and method for making surreal, mis- chievous and utopian proposals, bringing together artists and writers to explore money, caches, counterfeits, accumulation and decay. Through essays, fiction and artworks the publication asks why we consider certain objects worthy or worthless and questions
how we choose to preserve or discard the things around us in the museum, bin, or in the ground.
