NO ONE IS LAUGHING by Dinara Asadulina
136 x 196mm, full colour printing, sewn binding, softcover, 2022
No One is Laughing is a visual essay that has been written as a reflection on two events in September 2021: the author’s mother embarking on a first-ever trip to the land of her ancestors – Tatarstan – and the writer herself coming across a strange mesmerizing book, The Vertical Interrogation of Strangers by Bhanu Kapil. As a consequence of both occurrences, Dinara dares to ask her mother questions she was never brave enough to bring up before.
First trip. First dialogue.
No One is Laughing (2021) ruminates over the ideas of belonging and exclusion, clarity and ambiguity, numbness and memory.
