Latchkey's narrator's girlfriend has just left for Venezuela, abandoning him to his bohemian ways. After the umpteenth robbery, and with the arrival of the Fingerprint Man and Pete the Three-Legged Mouse, his life starts to get a lot less lonely, but not an inch saner. Take the protagonists of Withnail & I, make them aspiring poets and transplant them to a squat in 1980s Liverpool inhabited by characters like Boss Eye, Bleachface, and Wyndham Lewis's biographer, soak the whole thing in the sad eternal beauty of the Blues, and you'll begin to have an idea of what this novella is like.
