DREAMING ABOUT TOMORROW by Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck
170 x 230mm, 44 pages, full colour printing, saddle stitched, softcover, 2023
What does it mean to dream about tomorrow? This new title articulates how dreaming about tomorrow can be an act of bravery. The publication follows an exhibition of the same title, which took place at Nidi Gallery (Tokyo) in October 2022. The exhibition and publication feature recent paintings, some in oil, others using natural pigments, including some created from plants grown in the artist's allotment. Photographs from Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck's ongoing series Analog Diary and unique collaborative works with ceramic designer Olivia Fiddes (UK) and weaver Pauline Simonet (France), , as well as The Gardening Drawing Club and the Seed Library set up at Nidi Gallery are also featured in this publication.
This publication features a new essay by PhD holder and Oslo University-based researcher Veronika Muchitsch as a written response to the project.
“Dreaming About Tomorrow radiates with a radical softness and unwavering openness that characterises Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck’s artistic and lived practice at large.” Veronika Muchitsch
“As I have suggested in this essay, dreaming is here not an entirely utopian activity, but materialises through actions of care, compassion, and community that weave an intricate fabric of time. In the face of endings, loss, and time standing still in small and big ways, this work inspires us to dare to remember, to build the present and to dream of tomorrow, as blurry as it may appear.” Veronika Muchitsch
