Toy Box Coffin is honored to present the archival edition Sua Yoo Collected Comics 2011-2013. Compiling the ill-seen works Asian Mysticism and College Girl Mafia, with a supplemental 8 page interview pamphlet where we discuss the creation of these ambitious comics and their relation to the artist’s prolific and diverse oeuvre.
Created in Chicago from 2011-2013 while attending art school, Sua Yoo’s Asian Mysticism and College Girl Mafia have long stood out as breakthroughs in the comics medium, both pushing the form forward while turning it on its head. In response to the American appropriation of Anime aesthetics in the early aughts, Sua’s comics present golems in the form of “Anime girls” as a way to process the subjects of featurism, racial caricature, gender plasticity, and trans-ness. Some will immediately recognize a drawing from Asian Mysticism as the cover to a popular album from 2012 (Death Grips The Money Store), while this image has been burned into the larger cultural consciousness, on further investigation we come to learn the symbolic and personal nature of the drawing, and its deeper meaning in the context of the original publication. College Girl Mafia melts net art aesthetics with rave/party culture while channeling the pantheon of American Cartoons and all of their baggage. A cacophony of references rendered into a surreal, hilarious, heartbreaking, and profound funny book.
