AS IN, THE NEEDLE KNOWS THE NORTH by Iris Cuppen
A5, 12 pages, Black & white printing, Saddle stitched, Softcover, Edition of 200, 2026
As in, the needle knows the north traces two journeys, each in their own darkness: the first, a one-line-per-day venture into poetic form, destination unknown; the second, a trip to the arctic winter of Svalbard. Across both disorientations, a direction gradually emerges and questions of desire, doubling, and bearing witness become less metaphorical than first expected.
Cuppen’s title references a letter from Emily Dickinson to Thomas Wentworth Higginson in 1862, echoing the taut dynamic of encouragement and restraint that accompanies the step from the private into publication.
