OUTWARDS NOT UPWARDS: A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO AUTONOMOUS ANTIFASCISM by Bameen R. Ears
A5, 40 pages, Black & white printing, Saddle stitched, Softcover, Edition of 25, 2025
"Outwards Not Upwards" was born of unrest and worry in the darkest moments of summer 2024, as racist pogroms swept across the UK. Against that tide of hatred and ignorance grew a spontaneous wave epitomising solidarity and resistance - an organic upswell of community spirit that embodied the responsibility to act in a time of dire need.
The storm passed... somewhat. Nonetheless, most of a year later, the churn of fascism and the far right continues to roil, at times just beneath the surface, teetering above us at others.
And yet at the local level, the task of facing down an emboldened and violent populism is dangerous work, often solitary and always secretive. In this context, figureheads and mass meetings simply will not do. How could such a movement grow in a way that keeps its members safe and secure? By replicating this small-scale affinity group model in a thousand iterations; by growing outwards, not upwards.
The moment remains ripe, therefore - as it unfortunately often is - for a primer that instructs would-be antifascists on the structures, lessons and lore that can quench a movement. This, then, is a practical guide to hyperlocal autonomous antifascism; a skill-share written from hard-won experience with humour and no little love; a gift from dedicated organisers, who would rather be doing anything else, to the activists of tomorrow, who know what must be done.
