RADIO ARCHIVE (2014 - 2023) by Neil Luck
CD, Colour sleeves, 2023
This small archive is a glimpse of a body of work by London sound artist/composer Neil Luck made between 2014-2023 for, on, or with radio. The work dwells on the ephemerality of the broadcast - it disappears (literally) into the ether once transmitted. This archive then is not so much an act of personal preservation, but rather an attempt to present a snapshot of a continually developing practice and body of work, and perhaps most importantly to capture an impression of a small community of friends and collaborators who have helped to articulate a contribution to a vital and idiosyncratic subculture of experimental sound work. All of the tracks are removed from their original contexts, to be experienced more as a dislocated, hypnagogic constellation of moments. The earlier material generally plays on commercial and mainstream radio tropes, later works engage more with the material aspects of radio sound and the almost telepathic nature of medium itself. Other clips highlight the possibility of the live broadcast as a window onto vérité moments of encounter.
