WASTELAND, POETRY OF CITY LIVING by Siris Gallinat

122 x 177mm, 94 pages, Colour Printing, Perfect bound, Softcover, 2024

From Germany to Sweden to London to ‘make it’, crazy years living in the warehouses & I wrote everywhere: on the bus home at 5am, at a party I wasn’t into, on receipt paper at work, after a dramatic love affair, or some drunken kisses.
Every poem an attempt to solve life's riddles: Why do I want to be in the city though it feels destructive? What to do with grief? How to find belonging?

In Sweden I found my 'crew'. We partied a lot, acted together in theatre class, and stayed up late, piled on top of each other on the couch, watching movies. We sang Les Mis songs late at night in the streets, and laughed too loudly.
Yet, when it was time to go home, be it 10pm or 5am, I felt like my life was going nowhere. I felt isolated as an artist, stagnant, not changing the world as I dreamt of.

This is the poetry that got me through it, making sense of the senseless; zero hour low pay jobs while going to drama school in London in my late 20s, parks that are fenced off, so you can’t have your lunch anywhere, so many pretty people in the streets, but so hard to meet someone to truly click with, what to do with the mind while you’re standing ‘guarding your station’ at the cinema? How to handle grieving for one of the most important people in your life while living abroad? Missing a funeral for a film shoot (never again). Poems have gotten me through the toughest times, and my biggest wish is that they can accompany you too.
