STALAGMITES by Carole Villain

148 x 210mm, 124 pages, black and white printing, perfect bound, 2022

Stalagmites tells the story of the making of an artwork using clay, pigment, indigo ink, plaster, glue, words, ideas, dust, minerals, stones, soils and dreams. Focused on the performative aspect of making, on materials, and on the idea of inter-connectivity of things, the book explores the cycles of making and the slow building of things.

The texts follow chronologically the everyday process of making as well as the ideas born through the act of making / writing. The texts range from practical recipes to poetic or abstract stories. In Stalagmites, things and ideas appear, disappear, absorb, digest. The individual layers of matter and experience are porous and inter-connected. Everything interpenetrates everything. Everything repeats itself. Everything evolves quietly or with a sound. Everything is moving, at its own pace. And ultimately, everything is tied to the cycles of nature. Stalagmites is an open-ended, multilayered story enriched by the everyday experience of looking, making, writing, waiting, and listening. It is told with and without words.
