Our connection with artworks may endure long after we first encounter them. Class brings together two texts that direct attention towards their primary influences: E.M. Forster’s novel Howards End and Björk’s song Jóga.
Concerning Leonard Bast by Eileen Daly focuses on a scene in the novel, where Leonard Bast, an insurance clerk, describes to the Schlegel sisters a walk he has taken on the outskirts of London. Bast is seen as being idealistic, romantic and unable to transcend structural class inequality. However the poem presents him as more than a ‘type’ and gives him a sense of agency.
Jóga: A Response reflects on Top of the Pops as a gateway into art and culture. Growing up as a working class teenager in the 1990s in Cornwall, the experience of seeing Björk perform the song on TV was a pivotal moment for George Vasey. He sees this text as a dialogue with Björk’s lyrics, reflecting on formative encounters and providing a transitionary moment through which to examine class and identity.
CLASS is part of Daly and Vasey’s wider research around working-class form.
