HOOP by Sana Serkebaeva

A4, 16 pages risograph printing, saddle stitched, 2024

This zine presents the process of working on the hoop project, which was heavily inspired by the storyline of ‘Legend of Naiman Ana’ in Chinghiz Aitmatov’s ‘The Day Lasts More than a Hundred Years’. The legend tells the story of mankurt, which in a figurative sense refers to people who lost touch with their ethnic homeland. Since the publication of the book, the term has become commonly used and has come to represent non-Russians/Central Asians who have lost their ethnic heritage to the effects of the Soviet system. The project was enabled by group reading and was explored in digital video form and as a shadow theatre installation.
