From the introduction:
Love is a strange word. It isn’t like other words. More strength, less precision.
I love you could mean: I treasure you, I like you, I want to be with you, I need you right now, I choose you forever.
English takes a bit of flack for having only one word for love while other languages, such as Greek or Sanskrit, offer many. How many meanings are we crushing into four tiny letters? Sometimes love is a feeling so strong that it numbs the other feelings. Or it’s a dream that wakes you, a disease that cures, a way of travelling between two distant points, a special place, a hopeless gap, a way of seeing, a lie, a promise, a decision. English may only have one word for love but hundreds more still wouldn’t be enough.
This is a book about loves. An atlas for the types of love I’ve seen so far. A dictionary in which all the words are spelt the same.
