MAUNGA by Aphrodite Delaguiado
A6, 28 pages, Colour printing, Saddle stitched, Softcover, 2024
Maunga means mountain in Māori. Tahuna (Queenstown) has 389 named mountains and some of them are featured in this zine.
When I visited Aotearoa (New Zealand) in winter, I noticed that the Māori names for mountains were inspired by myths, legends, and the people’s spiritual connection with the land, while the English word for the same mountains were the names of the men who “discovered” or "conquered" them. As if mountains will ever kneel to Man?
