PAN NOIR by Doriane Souilhol

“Doriane Souilhol’s first book is part of a complex process of concealing where she covering, erasing and revealing different emblems from various French flags. At first, the unmodified engraved flags illustrations are silkscreened with black ink. Following this step, the ornaments, surface features and symbols are erased and covered by a black screen/weft, tangled hand-drawn lines. Veiled by the ink, the flags’ contents are emptied, the images unfold and fold into « PAN de papier », « PAN de tissu », « PAN noir ». Somewhere between light, black ink, coverings and layerings, words reappear highlighted, now relics of bygone days (?). In her overall gesture, Doriane Souihol reveals what has been dimmed and faded. Concealing can be understood as the action of covering and recovering at the same time. Recover what has been lost and over-shadowed. Doriane Souihol’s coverings emerged in September 2015. Limited edition of 100 silkscreened books with a “PAN noir” folded by the artist, to be unfolded, hung, spread out, displayed, folded back up again.”
