TEXTURE by Leon Dijkstra

200 x 275mm, 20 pages, Black & white printing, Hand sewn, Softcover, Hand numbered & signed edition of 58, 2025

The artist’s book explores the interplay of depth perception, lettering, and language. The letterforms in this book that compose the word TEXTURE are a visual echo of a line from David Cronenberg’s film eXistenZ (1999):  “I’m feeling a little disconnected from my real life. I’m kinda losing touch with the texture of it.”  The appearance of letterforms emerge through depth perception, manifesting as dimensional constructs without such physical origin or reality, and thereby transcending their actual structure — a process I describe as ‘mental sculpting’.

The book follows this principle: Using horizontal lines with arcs to induce sensations of spatial depth, on a flat surface, from which seven letterforms emerge. Beginning with the minimum number of required lines, each subsequent letterform is made up of additional lines with arcs. Gradually, a sense of visual movement arises to amplify the sensation of spatial depth.
