PORTAL by Gonçalo Neto

157 x 240mm, 36 pages, Black & white printing, Saddle stitched, Softcover, Includes poster, Edition of 200, 2025

Initially started during the UK lockdown in 2020 as a personal project to stay grounded, Portal evolved into a full-scale artistic statement. “I was tired of making single pieces of art that only people with money could access,”says Gonçalo. “Portal was a way to create something substantial and affordable that still carried the same emotional and visual weight as my one-off pieces.” Each page was hand-drawn in ink on A3 paper using dipping pens and a range of fine nibs, with initial drafts sketched in pencil on newsprint. Corrections were made using high-quality whiteout — sparingly, to preserve the surface’s integrity. Though Gonçalo has been drawing since childhood, his entry into comics was a natural evolution rather than a long-held obsession.“I was never really into Western comics,” he says. “I came to the medium as a way to expand my drawing practice. I read manga as a teen — usually when I got impatient waiting for anime episodes to drop.”
