NOT BRITTLE, NOT RIGID, NOT FIXED by Janice Parker and Emmie McLuskey Et al.

148 x 210mm, 96 pages, black and white printing, perfect bound, softcover, 2023

With foreword by artist Emmie McLuskey, and afterword by dancer and choreographer Janice Parker, delve into a fourteen-day journey along one of Edinburgh’s best-known waterways. Stretching from the Lochrin Basin to Wester Hailes, Janice Parker’s movement work saw her create a point-to-point journey during Edinburgh Art Festival 2022. Janice used her body to respond to the architecture, people and nature of the Union Canal, as it celebrated its 200th anniversary. Janice invited artist Audrey Grant, artist and photographer Matthew Arthur Williams, and architect, academic and educator Susanne Ewing to respond to her movements through sketching, photography and writing. Janice kept a log of each day of activity along the canal – documenting conversations and observations. Moments were also captured in photography by Sally Jubb and Duncan McGlynn. This publication of 300 designed by artist and graphic designer Maeve Redmond brings together these responses, allowing the reader to connect with their local environments. Not Brittle, Not Rigid, Not Fixed is commissioned as part of Channels, a programme curated by Associate Artist Emmie McLuskey for Edinburgh Art Festival 2022. This publication is supported by the Scottish Government’s Festivals EXPO Fund and EventScotland.
