UNDERGROUND NO MORE by William Roy

210mm x 210mm, 40 pages, black and white printing, saddle stitched, 2020

This is from a shoot I did in a now closed down part of central London, in a slightly run-down underground arcade. What was unique about the space was even though it was close to the big business of the city, it was a unique amalgamation of small and quirky shops (including the world’s oldest family run magic shop, Davenports), as well as an incredible group of dancers who used to practice, talk and generally hang out. This series of images tries to capture the spirit of the place. Alas, the arcade has now been closed for redevelopment into office space. The shops have been forced to move on, and the dancers have lost their home. But the memories remain, as does their hope for the future that is more than just a location.
