TYPHOON BLUES by Tom Kondrat
210 x 240mm, 96 pages, full colour printing throughout, open stitched binding - coptic, 2020
To those who are not directly affected, the event of a typhoon brings all kind of reactions based on traditional media news coverage and common sense. These narratives tell very little, though, about your guts and bones feeling that a storm is approaching, or the quiet serenity that precedes a furious storm. Tom Kondrat has lived in Taiwan and pictured several typhoons before they arrive: in his work, this strange peacefulness is translated into colour and composition. Additional material on the typhoons, such as their trajectories and part of the media news coverage, help to build a wholesome narrative on these tropical storms. "Typhoon Blues" is an ode to anticipation, to the calmness that fills the air before the storm.
