The images are ads first and foremost, of course, so they already have a “job” or use that is independent from me. My involvement changes the terms of how we engage with them, which is one point of tension. In making the images physical works, I print them on glossy paper at a commercial printer scaled to 8 x 10 inches, which mimics the objecthood of traditional headshots. I chose to externalise them that way in part because I like how that format is an established photographic system already – not only do our bodies easily know how to approach and receive images of that size and scale, but we might conjure memories of seeing haphazardly framed headshots lining the walls at specific restaurants or dive bars. It all fits into a certain logic of utility or even an economy of means we already know what to do with. In that way, the work as a final, physical object hopefully extends the tension between the intentional and the incidental. I like to let things be themselves.
