“BAT Zine is composed of images gathered around our studio in the Brooklyn Army Terminal, rendered onto polyester offset lithographic printing plates. Some plates were hand drawn or are rubbings of surfaces in and around the BAT complex. Others are photographs taken out of our studio window, or on the waterfront in the parking lot below, or inside the studio itself. Each plate was then mounted on our Multilith-1250 offset press and printed on a random number of pages in a randomly selected color, either as the first or second layer of any given image. Once all the pages had two layers on each side, we sorted the pages and collated them randomly, occasionally intervening to choose the order of the pages. This project traces the process of learning to operate the press while experimenting with different methods for making and printing plates. It's also about immersing oneself in a site and translating that immersion into an all-encompassing document.”
