Around 1\/3 of Wales' homes are terraced houses. Each house has a back-garden, every garden is more or less the same size to the one next door. This repetitive urban pattern if looked from the sky at the end of the summer appeared to me like a series of parks, one for each block of houses. The not-so-tall walls that divided every individual small garden were disappearing in the dense foliage. During these sessions, each male who participated would undress, they were required to be bare-chested at the very least. Under one condition: anonymity. No physical criteria, nothing pre-defined. Dal Mas could view them but they could not view her as she photographed them in their bedrooms by way of her computer screen using a digital camera. These were men she had never met before, directed from a distance. They did not know the exact moment the photograph would be taken, at her discretion Dal Mas would signify a conclusion to the Skype call, brief goodbyes would be exchanged and then the call would end. Leaving behind a fleeting intimacy. This body of work is about dehumanisation, vulnerability and distant relationships; the difficulty in connecting and engaging intimately with another as well as the eagerness to please. The disconnection provided by the camera, the different rooms, the screen becoming an observation box for these casual men. It questions and explores their desire to be looked at, by scrutinising their physicality through a digital presence – that being impressive, elusive, desirable or consisting of mixed emotions. The work suggests fatigue, of having to exist in the other’s eyes as an object of desire. Thereby, this series also queries the viewer-voyeur role of an audience. While the low-fi aesthetics of the work refers to functional images one could find and utilise by using social media, or other meeting apps, eager to connect us with one another.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003ePublished by\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"DIRTYillness","offers":[{"title":"English","offer_id":41886135550182,"sku":"","price":29.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"French","offer_id":41886135582950,"sku":"","price":29.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0603\/5338\/0582\/products\/01_D_27542541-1b89-427a-b67e-8ec51db8e537.jpg?v=1634664745"},{"product_id":"2020-7-16-nyqnjt52880gtesgp81v5kovy9wub9","title":"CATCH YOUR BREATH by Joshua Turner","description":"\u003cp class=\"\"\u003e24 x 19 cm, 64 pages, Full color offset printed, Saddle stitch, Turkish marble print cover, Hand numbered, Ed. It opposes the current standards of digital photography and encourages to accept and admire flaws in the world that desires perfection. The idea for this publication was born after years of believing that only high-quality images are worth something. My approach towards photography has changed, and I have begun questioning digital photography and its values after I started using my dad's old analogue camera that is being passed down in my family. One day, I got a roll of very blurry pictures back from a photo lab. Usually, I would move on and forget about the frames I'm not happy with, but this time I kept coming back to these scans. Seeing them together and not among better photos, not comparing them to more successful shots made me fascinated by this collection of useless photos. I have started thinking about the factors that make a particular image worthless, and I pulled out my archive of negatives and searched for other pictures I have never paid attention to because I considered them useless. Gathering them all and looking at them in a different context helped me appreciate them. I have learnt to embrace the poor image, accept the failure and find inspiration in it. This zine is an effort to become more open with my mental health than I ever have been before. It’s a window into my mind when fighting depression - a self-inflicted sense of clarity I have always needed. It equips a level of vulnerability that is brand new to me, which is both terrifying and exciting. The zine is 44 pages long and contains a collection of experimental photography, paintings, ink print and writing. It is available to purchase now. …You don’t have to buy it, though. This project means a lot to me, and I want it to be available to everyone, regardless of a price. If you are interested, I will send you a free abridged digital version.
