THE BUTTERFLYBLADE_MNEMOSYNE MONTAGE by Cora Weiss
2x A4 zines, 32 pages each, Colour printing, Saddle stitched, Softcover, 2024
A self-published thesis by Glasgow based artist Cora Weiss (b.2000) that explores the 'Mnemosyne Atlas' (1924-29), Aby Warburg’s unwieldy and unfinished image archive formatted by way of 63 black hessian panels. It delves into a methodology created to navigate and comment on an abundance of images. What to do with contemporary image overload? Look to Warburg’s work! This thesis travels through the problems and brilliances involved with a multiplicity of media, and consequently the tools that can be used to make sense of such abundance. It speaks on the desire to collect, compile and cultivate new meanings. This signals the beginning of Weiss’s research in looking at and creating documents of cultural memory. Look out for the release of collectible image atlases that reflect her (and in turn perhaps your own?) media consumption! 'ButterflyBlade' is made up of two volumes, one for image and one for text, perhaps have the two open at once for cross-referencing?
